For each of the problems below, use the technology guide to perform a statistical analysis. You should justify your choice of method, including any assumptions made in the use of the method. You should indicate whether a two-tailed, left-tailed, or right-tailed analysis is appropriate, and, in hypothesis testing problems, state the null and alternative hypotheses. If the problem does not specify a level of significance, you should choose one.

Problem 1

Records indicate that 112 Confederate soldiers out of each 1,000 who fought in the Civil War was killed. A sample of 43 unit histories for units present at Gettysburg indicates that 145 out of 1,289 soldiers were killed. Does this data support the claim that the average number killed out of every thousand soldiers is more than 112?

Problem 2

It is believed that in 1876 less than 30 percent of the firearms used by Native Americans were repeating rifles. Archeological evidence in the form of shell casings is recovered from the site of a late nineteenth century battle fought by Native Americans and federal troops. Ballistics analysis indicates that of 185 individual firearms believed to be used by the Native Americans, 72 were repeating rifles. Based on the sample, is the ballistics evidence consistent with the 30 percent figure?

Problem 3

During the tenure of a certain majority leader, members of Congress affiliated with the majority party voted in accordance with the wishes of the majority leader 92% of the time. A sample of 150 ballots cast following the appointment of a new majority leader indicates conformance with the party line was 86 percent. Is the sample data consistent with 92 percent conformance?
