MA207-B Spring 2008 Assignment 2

The exercise consists of:

1. downloading the contents of a spreadsheet in comma delimited format
2. importing the data into your favorite spreadsheet program
3. modifying the spreadsheet to compute an average value
4. saving the spreadsheet and submitting it via email

If the machine you are using is configured to automatically open a spreadsheet when a .csv file is downloaded, you may be able to accomplish steps 1 and 2 by simply clicking or double-clicking on the link.

If not, you may have to right click on the link and use the "save as" function to save a local copy of the .csv file, preferably on your Desktop. Then, open the file with a spreadsheet program (you may be able to double-click the file icon).

Modify the spreadsheet by typing a formula to compute the average value into the cell below the total. The exact formula to use will depend on the number of data values you have. Here are some examples:

• If you have 9 data values, move the cursor to cell B12 type =average(B2:B10)
• If you have 6 data values, move the cursor to cell B9 type =average(B2:B7)
• If you have 7 data values, move the cursor to cell B10 type =average(B2:B8)
• If you have 12 data values, move the cursor to cell B15 type =average(B2:B13)

A sample modified spreadsheet is posted for reference. Position the cursor on cell B12 to see the correct formula for this example. The formula should be identical to the formula in column B on the Total line, but with SUM replaced by AVERAGE.

The computed average should agree with the value in the table below.
