MA145 Final Exam - Takehome Portion
For each of the problems below, use the MA145 technology guide to perform a statistical analysis.
You should justify your choice of method, including any assumptions made in the use of the method.
You should indicate whether a two-tailed, left-tailed, or right-tailed analysis is appropriate,
and, in hypothesis testing problems, state the null and alternative hypotheses.
If the problem does not specify a level of significance, you should choose one.
Problem 1
In a double-blind experiment 80 patients with falciparum malaria are divided into two groups
of forty. The first group is treated with chloroquine, and the second receives ACT. After
6 weeks, there are 17 remissions in the ACT group and 8 in the chloroquine group. Does this data
support the conclusion that ACT is a more effective treatment?
Problem 2
A survey of 35 Ph.D. programs in engineering is conducted prior to the enactment of antiterror legislation. Three years after the legislation is enacted, a followup survey is conducted at
each of the 35 programs. The average difference in the number of foreign graduate students
is -5.1 with a standard deviation of 4.5. Does this data support the claim that the legislation has resulted in lower enrollment of foreign students in Ph.D. engineering programs?
Problem 3
A government health agency estimates the level of HIV infection in a certain area at 15.3%.
Testing is performed on a random sample of 45 residents and 12 of the tests are positive.
Does this data support the agency figure?
