MA145 Final Exam - Takehome Portion
For each of the problems below, use the MA145 technology guide to perform a statistical analysis.
You should justify your choice of method, including any assumptions made in the use of the method.
You should indicate whether a two-tailed, left-tailed, or right-tailed analysis is appropriate,
and, in hypothesis testing problems, state the null and alternative hypotheses.
If the problem does not specify a level of significance, you should choose one.
Problem 1
Published records suggest that out of every 1000 Confederate soldiers who served in the
Civil War, 115 were killed. A random sample of 15 Confederate units from a certain battle
indicates that 134 of 1308 soldiers were killed. Does this data support the claim that
the proportion of Confederates killed in this battle was the same as the average for the war?
Problem 2
An exit poll in a precinct with 21,000 voters questions 1,000 voters and finds that 541 voted for
candidate A. If these voters can be considered a random sample of the precinct, can candidate
A be projected to win the election with a 99% level of confidence?
Problem 3
Records from a banding station indicate that in 2004, the average weight of a certain species
of bird is 17.3 grams with a standard deviation of 2.0, based on 58 individual birds. In 2005, 73 individuals from this species are captured and their average weight is 19.1 grams with a standard deviation of 2.3. Is this data consistent with the claim that the average weight in the population has not changed?
